The small creatures assist in the toy-making process in Santa's workshop at the North Pole and are traditionally described as wearing green or red and having pointed ears. In some works, including Clement C. Moore's famous "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," Santa himself is described as "a right jolly old elf."
